More about Wasps

The two types of wasp calls we usually get are:

  1. Nuisance wasps in the garden (where the nest can’t be found).
  2. An active wasp nest on the property.

Why do I have all these wasps hanging around my garden?

Nuisance wasps don’t necessarily mean you have an active wasp nest nearby. It is more likely that there are trees or bushes that provide a sugar based liquid food such as nectar that the adult wasps can feed on.

Wasps are swarm feeders. If a foraging wasp finds a good food source, it’ll return to the nest and alert the other workers. In a very short time one wasp can become hundreds. Once a food location is identified, they’ll keep returning to it until the food runs out.

The wasps also forage for nesting material by stripping wood from fences, decks and furniture; this usually means a nest is nearby. If you think that a nest is present, stand and watch for a few minutes. This is normally enough to establish a flight path and determine where the main activity is coming from.

I have a lot of wasps coming and going from one spot. Do I have a nest?

Larger wasp nests have quite a bit of traffic coming and going, so they’re be easy to spot.

Common nesting locations are:

  • Gaps in the foundation walls, like the ventilation openings, weep holes, trap doors.
  • The guttering and edges of roofing.
  • The base of thick shrubs like flax, agapanthus, tree trunks and stumps.

This basic visual inspection will normally be enough to establish if a nest is present.

I can see where they’re coming from. Should I block up the hole or throw some petrol on it?

We strongly advise against blocking the entrance to a wasp nest.

The wasps get agitated and immediately start trying to find another way in and more importantly…..OUT!  Wasps in properties that have their exits blocked will chew their way out, usually to the inside of the house.

DIY wasp extermination treatments like petrol or those available from the local hardware store can sometimes be effective, but you will need to be able to CLEARLY see the entrance to the nest. To do this you’re going to have to get close. If you don’t have the correct protective clothing, doing this can result in a serious attack.

Never attempt to kill a wasp nest if you can’t clearly see the entrance and/or don’t have a quick, safe escape route.

What about wasp nest removal?

Once the nest has been treated and the wasps exterminated, we do not recommend wasp nest removal; we recommend you leave it in place.

The nest was built there because it was a good place. Wasps don’t re-use old nests. If you remove a treated nest, the location becomes free for another queen to build a nest another year.

Also, other nests nearby will know the location of the treated nest and will investigate from time to time to see if there is an opportunity to raid it. When they enter the treated nest they will come in contact with the powder and occasionally enough is taken back to the neighbouring nest to kill that one as well.

What we do

Wasp extermination and nest control

If we can clearly see the entrance to the nest, we use it to inject a powder directly into the nest. If the entrance is not visible, we apply a residual spray to areas where wasps land before entering the nest. As far as wasp extermination goes, both methods are very effective at getting product into the nest to exterminate it.

Our focus is on your safety when exterminating the nest. We approach the nest in a way that minimizes disturbing it. This ensures the wasps become confused rather than aggressive and dangerous.

The nest is usually dead within a couple of hours.

Nuisance wasps

Nuisance wasps have been difficult to treat in the past as locating the nest was difficult. Broadcast treatments couldn’t be applied to areas they frequented because of the adverse impact on bees.

We do have solutions to take care of these wasps, but it all depends on the individual circumstance. Give the team a call to discuss and we’ll see if we can come up with a solution.

If you want advice on wasp extermination, wasp issues and which treatment options suit you best, feel free to give the wasp extermination team a call. Phone Bug King on 0800 546454.

So this is my second time using Bug King, I had used them last year, since then we have bought a new home and the previous owners had a dog so naturally how new home had fleas which was biting my young children at night. Just like my 5 star experience before we go the same 5 star treatment second time around. Mo was once again earlier than expected which was great he did what he had to and went over and beyond what we expected. Yvette in the office was a breeze to work with. My kids have not been bitten since so I am one happy mum with happy kids! I didn't expect anything less from Bug King and as long as the awesome service doesn't change I will always be a loyal customer if I do anything done at my house they will always be my first point of contact! Thanks again Mo and Yvette best in business!

The previous tenants had 3 pets who clearly had thousands of their own pets! After 9 flea bombs, we admitted defeat and I called Mark who was able to accommodate us the next day which was amazing. He explained the flea life cycle and why the bombs weren't working, and why his solution would. Half an hour later the house was treated, and so far so good! I definitely recommend Bug King for a top notch, professional service.
