Pest control for rats
The most successful of all the world’s pest animals, rats are vectors of disease. Living alongside us, they scavenge on our waste and live in our homes.
Rats are more prevalent than ever. Rat and mouse control is one of the most common enquiries we get year-round. People call us because they want an exterminator for rats and mice who’ll turn up and do the business: get rid of rodents. We most often get called because of scurrying noises heard in the middle of the night. Yes, it’s most probably rats.
Rats like to remain under cover in walls and roof voids. Where possible, they also prefer to scamper close to walls and vertical surfaces.
Rodents can pop in for a visit at any time of the year, but autumn and winter is the time when mice and rats look for new supplies of food and seek shelter from the colder weather.
How to get rid of rats?
Well firstly, we don’t use those ultrasonic things you plug in the wall. Why? Because they don’t work. If those gizmos were effective, then we’d recommend them 100 per cent. The fact is, they aren’t.
Call us and one of our experts will come to your place and then carry out a thorough inspection of your home or business.
They will then secure baits in areas where there is evidence of rodent activity, possibly in roof spaces, ceiling voids and wall cavities. The baits are secured using wire or are in lockable bait stations if children or pets are in the vicinity.
Our exterminator for rats and mice will also offer advice on eliminating food sources that attract rodents, as well as advice on what the likely access points are into your home, such as overhanging trees.

More about Rodents
Rat and mouse control is one of the most common enquiries we get year-round.
Some of the most common questions we get asked are:
I’m hearing noises in the roof. Is it rats?
If you’re hearing the noise in the middle of the night, it’s probably rats. If the noise is at dusk or just before first light, it’s likely birds. Interestingly, you’ll never get rats and birds living in the ceiling space at the same time.
Why are rats living in my roof?
As there’s no food or water in your roof, so there’s only one reason they’re up there. It’s a nice warm, dry, predator free place for a nest.
Is it true that they chew water pipes looking for water?
Yes and no. Rats will chew pipes and wires (and pretty much anything) but it’s not because they’re looking for water. It’s natural behavior. Rodents teeth continually grow, and they need to constantly chew to keep them at a manageable length.
What happens if a rodent dies in the wall or ceiling, etc?
There is a 1 in 20 (5%) chance that a rodent may die in an inaccessible area of the home. You will usually notice this as an unpleasant odour. If this happens, we have odour bags available that will absorb the smell while the rodent dries out.
Do those ultrasonic things you plug in the wall work?
No. Without getting too technical, the ability for any animals to quickly adapt to repeated stimuli is well known.
What this means is that you may get some temporary relief from the problem but before you know it, rats and mice are going only going to treat these products as soothing background music. Something that provides an assurance that everything’s OK as they go about their daily tasks.
If these products worked then we’d be using them. We know how to get rid of rats. These gizmos don’t work, so we don’t use them.
What happens if my cat/dog eats a rodent that’s been poisoned?
Nothing. The risk of secondary poisoning is practically non-existent. The potency of the bait has been lost by the time poisoning effect on the rodent is noticeable.
What we do
The most successful solution for how to get rid of rats is a baiting strategy. If set up correctly, this overcomes all the natural rodent behaviours that make other rat and mouse control methods less successful.
Our technician will complete a thorough inspection of your home, looking for potential access points, evidence of rodent activity and food sources that attract rats and mice.
Baits are secured in areas where there is evidence of activity. The baits are secured using wire and/or in lockable bait stations if accessible by children or pets. This also allows us to monitor the level of rodent activity if a return visit is required.
Will the rodents die in the wall/ceiling, etc?
There is a 1 in 20 (5%) chance that a rodent may die in an inaccessible area of the home. You will usually notice this aa an unpleasant odour. If this happens we have odour bags available that will absorb the smell while the rodent dries out.
Our technicians will also offer advice on eliminating food sources that attract rodents as well as what the likely access points are into your home and how to seal them. Usually it’s a simple matter of trimming trees.

Preparation & Aftercare
No preparation or aftercare is required for rodent treatments.
We make the security of our bait placements a high priority. If children or pets have potential access the bait, we will secure it in a high-quality lockable bait station. If bait is placed in inaccessible areas, we will wire it in place to ensure that rodents can’t drag it to new locations.
All bait we use contains Bitrex™. This makes the bait very bitter to the taste, discouraging eating.
If bait is accidentally consumed, an injection of Vitamin K1 will overcome any poisoning effects. The bait is not fast acting, you will have days rather than hours to react to any bait accidentally consumed.
