Paper wasps
Paper wasps are about 25mm in length. You can easily identify them by their long, drooping back legs and slow style of flying. These guys usually live in small grey, papery nests in urban properties. You’ll typically find their nests under eaves or in sheltered spots in the garden. They are umbrella-shaped to prevent water damage.
Paper wasps attack live insects, such as honeybees, monarch caterpillars, butterflies, and dragonflies.
Common or German wasps
Common or German wasps are the most dangerous animal in New Zealand. An estimated 1300 people seek medical attention for wasp stings across New Zealand each year. Someone dies from anaphylactic shock caused by wasps every 3.5 – 7 years.
Wasps kill loads of insects, a valuable food source for birds, upsetting the natural food chain of our forests. They will also attack and kill newly hatched birds.
They are about 13mm in length and live in large nests underground and in trees.
Vespula wasps can play havoc with our outdoor activities. They are are major buzz kill, ruining picnics, walks in the bush, mountain biking and other fun stuff.

Wasp extermination and nest control
If we can clearly see the entrance to the nest, we inject a powder directly into the nest. If the entrance is not visible, we apply a residual spray to areas where wasps land before entering the nest.
Our focus is on your safety when exterminating the nest. We approach the nest in a way that minimizes disturbing it. This ensures the wasps become confused rather than aggressive and dangerous.
The nest is usually dead within a couple of hours.
Why do I have all these wasps hanging around my garden?
If a foraging wasp finds a good food source, it’ll return to the nest and alert the other workers. In a very short time one wasp can become hundreds. Once a food location is identified, they’ll keep returning to it until the food runs out. The wasps also forage for nesting material by stripping wood from fences, decks and furniture; this usually means a nest is nearby.
I have a lot of wasps coming and going from one spot. Do I have a nest?
Larger wasp nests have quite a bit of traffic coming and going, so they’re be easy to spot. We strongly advise against blocking the entrance to a wasp nest. The wasps get agitated and immediately start trying to find another way in and more importantly…..OUT!
What about wasp nest removal?
Once the nest has been treated and wasps exterminated, we do not recommend wasp nest removal; we recommend leaving it in place. Wasps don’t re-use old nests and if you remove it, the spot becomes free for another queen to build a nest.

We accept cash, EFTPOS or Credit Card (Visa/Mastercard). We also offer Internet banking by prior arrangement. All invoices are subject to Bug King Ltd’s Terms of Trade.

- Cancellation of a booking on the day of appointment will incur a $100.00 + GST booking fee.
- Cancellation of a booking made the day prior to appointment, but within 24 hours, will incur a $50.00 + GST booking fee.
- No fees are charged for cancellations made with more than 24 hours’ notice.
