As summer hits Auckland, so do the flies. Flies tend to come with Christmas and the beautiful, warmer weather.
From December through to March, the biggest pest control request we get from Aucklanders is for fly control.
And this season looks like it is going to be an absolute cracker for ‘the buzz’. We’ve had a horrible damp spring to be followed by high temperatures. For flies, this is the perfect environmental storm.
Breeding like flies happens under normal conditions, but these annoying, horrible pests breed even faster when the weather is warm. In fact, flies also do a lot of things faster when the sun is shining. Being cold-blooded, their metabolism accelerates when it gets warmer. This means they excrete toxins faster. And why is that of any vague interest? Because it’s why flies take longer to die when you get hit with fly spray, if they die at all. Our fly treatments work at higher temperatures, as we use professional, quality products. These attack the flies on multiple levels, overcoming any increased resistance.
Getting rid of flies – things you can do
The first thing to do is get rid of, or close up, all rubbish and anything smelly. Flies like to breed and eat in warm, damp conditions, so if you have a compost bin, put it as far away from the house as possible. Lawn clippings also need to be well away from the house. Freezing any food scraps until rubbish day is another very good idea.
Have you noticed you see fewer flies on windy days? That’s because flies don’t like getting blown around. Get some air circulation going through your home and it tends to blast them out. Open the windows, turn on the fans or if you’ve got air conditioning, turn that on.

Spraying inside
We’ll recommend house spraying for flies in rooms where flies like to hang out and land: the kitchen, dining and living areas. Good coverage in these areas is essential. In other areas of the house, spraying ceilings and entry points onto patios and decks will keep flies out.
Spraying outside
We’ll concentrate on entry points and walls connected to the kitchen, dining and living areas. We’ll also spray the walls and eaves on the sunny side of the house because that’s where flies like to rest in the morning. Any other areas that attract flies will be sprayed as well, such as bins, compost heaps and any areas where your dog likes to hang out, for example.
Our fly treatments work by controlling the fly population. Instead of having 20 flies constantly annoying you, you should only notice one or two flies occasionally. Relief!
