A cockroach infestation is skin-crawlingly horrible, and a health hazard
Winter brings with it the potential for cockroach infestations in Auckland. And yes, cockroaches in your home can be pretty distressing. But not all cockroaches are created equal and not all cockroaches are grounds for panic.
In this blog, we’ll discuss the different types of cockroaches you may come across, how to distinguish between them and the solutions Bug King has in its arsenal to get rid of the bad cockroaches.
Auckland is home to various types of cockroaches, including
- Gisborne Cockroach
- Oriental Cockroach
- Smoky Brown Cockroach
- Native Cockroach
- American Cockroach
These outdoor cockroaches are harmless and prefer to live outside. They won’t try and take over your home, contaminate your food, or breed indoors. Their presence around your property can actually be beneficial. They are professional recyclers, munching on just about anything, including dead plants and animals, and animal waste. They create tunnels and feed on decomposing wood, pollen and leaves. This is great for your soil.
The cockroaches we don’t want indoors
Unlike outdoor cockroaches, German cockroaches are troublemakers. These are the critters who will happily start a cockroach infestation. They will invade your kitchen, ruin your food, reproduce like crazy, and leave droppings everywhere, subsequently creating a nasty hygiene hazard.
Goodbye to German cockroaches
Typically found in the kitchen area, German cockroaches like to lurk in places like microwaves, dishwashers, the back of the fridge, and the bottom of the cordless jug. These are their favourite hangouts because they are attracted to warmth and water sources.
How to differentiate between a harmless outdoor cockroach and a nasty indoor Geman cockroach?
If you turn on the light and see zillions of cockroaches scurrying around in the kitchen, then chances are you have a German cockroach infestation. However, if you spot a random cockroach in your bedroom or on a wall, it is likely to be just one of those harmless outdoor cockroaches. So, you can simply pick it up, pop it outside and set it on its way.

What we do
The approach to cockroach control depends on the type of cockroach you’re having problems with.
We use a spray/bait to spot treat throughout infested areas. The bait in the spray is not poisonous but will attract the cockroaches to where the treatment has been applied. While the cockroaches are eating the bait, they’re picking up thousands of particles of micro-encapsulated treatment which they transfer back to the nesting areas. The treatment is passed throughout the nest and kills the cockroaches when it enters their bodies. Usually, the cockroaches are gone within a couple of days.
While unusual, if it is a particularly bad infestation, we may recommend follow-up treatment after 2 weeks.
For wood cockroach control our focus is on keeping the cockroaches out of your home. To do this we apply a highly repellent external barrier around the base of the house, windows, doors and any other entry points we identify (pipes, wires, support poles for balconies, trees touching the house). Any cockroaches approaching the barrier will sense it and move back into the garden.
Preparation & Aftercare
No special preparation or aftercare is required for our cockroach control treatments.
No preparation is required. We prefer you to leave the infested areas as they are as this will reduce the risk of the cockroaches spreading to other areas if they’re disturbed.
Close all the doors and windows while the treatment is being applied.
Our unique internal treatment is so safe we can apply it to commercial kitchens while they’re cooking.
Our external treatments use synthetic pyrethroids (which are based on natural pyrethrums). The products we use have been proven safe in sensitive situations over several decades. All treatments are professionally applied and are at a level that are very safe for humans and pets.
